Yes. An annual Total Body Skin Exam (TBSE) is the best way to detect skin cancers, like melanoma, in their earliest, most treatable stages. Dr. James, a board-certified dermatologist, looks for subtle changes in moles and other lesions that are often invisible to the untrained eye. While some people may have lower risk and it may not be as essential to do it yearly there can still be value as many skin cancers that are caught are not the lesions patient’s come in for. What is the difference between a "medical" and a "cosmetic" appointment?
• Medical: Focuses on health concerns like acne, rashes, eczema, psoriasis, or suspicious moles. These are often covered by insurance. • Cosmetic: Focuses on aesthetic goals like smoothing wrinkles, evening skin tone, or facial rejuvenation (e.g., Botox, fillers, lasers). These are typically out-of-pocket.How should I prepare for my skin exam?
To provide the most accurate assessment, please remove all nail polish and makeup before your visit. This allows us to check your nail beds and facial skin for any irregularities. Be prepared to discuss your family medical history and any specific spots that have changed recently. Will my insurance cover my visit?
Coverage varies by plan. Generally, insurance covers medically necessary treatments (biopsies, acne, rosacea). Coverage does not mean there is no cost as cost to patient varies depending on their personal insurance plan and things such as copays, deductibles, and co-insurance. We are happy to work with your insurance but ultimately it is the patient’s responsibility to understand their own insurance plan as there is extreme variability. Cosmetic procedures are rarely covered. We recommend contacting your provider to verify if a referral is needed before your appointment as we don’t require a referral but your insurance might. What are the warning signs of skin cancer?
If you have a lesion that is not healing over 4-6 weeks this is something that should cause you to seek evaluation. Many non-melanoma skin cancers start as a spot that is rough or looks like a zit, is tender, bleeds easily, and doesn’t heal. Melanomas are often moles that are changing or sometimes present as a different looking new mole. Remember the ABCDEs of Melanoma: • Asymmetry (one half doesn't match the other) • Border (irregular or blurred edges) • Color (multiple colors or shades) • Diameter (larger than a pencil eraser) • Evolving (changing in size, shape, or itching/bleeding)Is there a "downtime" for cosmetic procedures?
It depends on the treatment! • Botox/Fillers: Minimal to no downtime with botox; with fillers bruising and swelling that could last up to a week may occur so you should plan for this possibility. • Chemical Peels: 3–7 days of redness and peeling. • Laser Resurfacing: May require 5–10 days of recovery depending on the intensity could be more. Why should I see a Dermatologist instead of a Med-Spa?
A dermatology office is led by Board-Certified physicians with years of specialized medical residency in skin, hair, and nails. This ensures that if a "cosmetic" spot is actually a skin cancer, it is identified and treated with medical expertise. What does a dermatologist treat?
Dermatologists are specialists of the hair, skin, and nails. We treat most conditions involving these areas both medically and cosmetically. While some specialize in a specific area and may not treat certain things most general dermatologist will treat the range of these conditions. How long will it take to get an appointment?
Our goal is to try and have availability in a reasonable amount of time. In many cases if you are flexible we can get you in for evaluation within a week or two.How long does it take to see results from dermatology treatments?
This clearly varies depending on what is being treated. With many acute rashes or conditions responding within a week or two but more chronic conditions like acne, rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema, likely taking months to stabilize. With cosmetic treatments this can vary with things like Botox taking about two week for treatment to fully set in, but with fillers there is an immediate change but looks best 3-4 weeks after treatment.
